Free of any Eastern influence, the debut recordings of Josh McKay's (Macha) new project glow softly with a heroin-laced calm, anesthetizing the listener to the dark melancholy which lies just beneath the surface. As with the Macha recordings Mckay's production is vital. Guest appearances include a gorgeous collaboration (track 6) with Japanese singer Haco, a member of Osaka's legendary experimentalists After Dinner, and female trio Hoahio (John Zorn's Tzadik Records). The stunning ten-minute, two-part title track that closes the album is the kind of song that comes along only once in a great while.” The Day (Featuring Haco “Purusa”) https://soundcloud.com/hacohacodotnet/seaworthy-the-day-featuring-haco The Ride, Part 1 & 2 https://youtu.be/6tcaNKSQvd4 Sea Manta https://youtu.be/Zwb9ci08KAs I Met Her In The Candy Store https://youtu.be/Dp0TSLxk4S4 ☁ Reviews (excerpts) / レビュー (抜粋) "Josh McKay is an American musician. He is best known as the bass guitarist for the indie rock band Deerhunter, with whom he has recorded three studio albums. Prior to joining the band, McKay was the founding member and frontman of the post-rock band Macha and a member of the shoegaze band Mice Parade. In 2003, McKay also played guitar and keyboard in his friends Matt and Bubba Kadane's band The New Year. McKay has also recorded solo material under the monikers Seaworthy and Abandon the Earth Mission.” from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_McKay_(musician) "Seaworthy is the solo project of Macha frontman Josh McKay. He's caught between his past and future on The Ride, which ditches Eastern instruments for the most part but still focuses on layered waves of sound (though in an altogether more smooth and subtle approach). The ambiance on this LP carries hints of McKay's pre-Macha days in Emperor Moth, a brooding rock trio from Gainesville, Florida. All three of McKay's projects reveal his draw towards the tension created by the drone, and the moody keyboards and deep basslines here were captured perfectly in the mix done at Andy LeMaster's Chase Park Transduction studio in Athens. McKay's balance between abstraction and conventional songwriting has yielded another great album." "Instead of revelation, a pulsing drone washes into a canyon of reverb on "In Anticipation Of," a short prelude to "The Day," one of two surprisingly great pop tracks that appear in the middle of the album. Prolific Japanese musician Haco glows here, her voice patiently pausing and then echoing dramatically over plodding drums and the accompaniment of ringing bell sounds." —Christopher Dare (Pitchfork, USA - January 2002) https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/7050-the-ride "Macha front-man Josh Mckay takes the solo route with Seaworthy, while keeping many of his band's sonic trademarks, including beautifully sweeping melodies, slow building arrangements and an intense ambient aesthetic. Mckay creates a unique warm brooding that is all encompassing by using a variety of percussive ingredients. This time out there is a more significant use of vocals, though not in the traditional sense. With the hypnotic environment being paramount, voices ease in and out of compositions like other instruments, never controlling the proceedings. While Indonesian styles coloured Mckay's work with Macha, he collaborates with a number of Japanese artists this time around. A variety of cultural influences including American rock are present on the The Ride, but as opposed to world music, Seaworthy is just otherworldly.
